Prague Travel Guide
Planning a trip to Prague? This is the best place to get started! Budget, things to do, photo spots… Check it here!
Since Google Maps became a thing, it is very easy to see what a city, town, or village looks like from a bird’s eye view. However, there is nothing like standing on an elevated point and observing a foreign or known city from a different perspective.
Prague is a beautiful city, full of small alleys, historical sites, and parks. And viewpoints. Prague has some amazing viewpoints: towers, elevated parks, bridges, bar terraces… Some of them are touristic places, while others have great views over them. This is a list of the best viewpoints over the city of Prague.
Petřín Gardens/Tower
The city of Prague is divided by the Vltava river. On the western side of the city, there are the Petřín Gardens. This large green space, which also made it to my best Prague free gardens guide, is a fantastic viewpoint over the city.
Either if you climb to the top of the characteristic metal tower or just admire it from the most elevated part of the gardens, it is worth visiting. Add a stop at the Strahov Monastery. There you can find one of the most beautiful libraries in Prague and Europe. One of my favorite promenades in the garden was the Promenáda Raoula Wallenberga. This is from where the photo below was taken!

Letna Park
Another park that is more than just a green area is Letna. This famous Prague park has one of the most iconic views over the city and the Vltava river. The typical image of the city of Prague with all its bridges one next to the other is taken from this exact spot in the Letna Park.
Besides this spot, Letna has a lot to offer, from beer gardens to the beautiful Hanavský Pavilion. Moreover, the view from the Pavilion base is also very beautiful.
Charles Bridge
Besides being probably the most famous touristic attraction in Prague, the Charles Bridge is also a very nice viewpoint thanks to its strategic location. Letna Park and the Prague Castle can be seen on one side, and Prague’s National Theatre on the other one.
Sometimes it is difficult to think of a tourist attraction as more than just a place to visit. In this case, though, make sure to look left and right while crossing it. Moreover, unlike on the bridge, which is always crowded with hordes of tourists, you can get your photos with no people in them!

Železniční Bridge
This is one of the viewpoints over Prague that you won’t find in most guides online. As a travel photographer, I always try to find different angles. When I saw the Železniční Bridge, I immediately thought that it was a good viewpoint over the Prague Castle.

This is a railway bridge with a small section for pedestrians, close to main tourist attractions such as the Dancing House or Vyšehrad. Nonetheless, the view from Vyšehrad and the view from Železniční Bridge have nothing in common. If you walk by the Vltava river you will eventually reach this bridge, so make sure to check this viewpoint!
Lesser Town Bridge Tower
Charles Bridge might be a great viewpoint over the city of Prague but there are two definitely better viewpoints at its end. The Lesser Town Bridge Tower is one of them. This tower, located at the western end of the Charles Bridge is one of the best viewpoints over Prague.
It is not free to climb to its top, and you might prefer to save this money for other items on this list. However, the 360 view was worth it. You have a close bird’s eye view over the red-tiled characteristic buildings of the city of Prague, besides a direct and non-interrupted view of the Charles Bridge, and the Prague Castle.
The prices to climb to the top vary depending on the ticket you take. You can take the ticket for the Lesser Town Bridge Tower (150CZ) or take the combined ticket that also includes the next item on this list (225CZ).
Old Town Bridge Tower
If I had to recommend one single viewpoint in Prague, it would be this one. There is not a more iconic view than the one of the Prague Castle and the Charles Bridge than the one from the Bridge Tower. The best time to visit this viewpoint is, without any doubt, at sunset. Depending on the time of the year it can get quite crowded. It is public knowledge that the tower has a fantastic viewpoint. Thus, I recommend getting there before sunset and enjoying the spectacle from this privileged spot.
As with the other tower of the Charles Bridge, there is an entry fee (official prices here). However, if you have to pay a fee to visit any site in Prague this is the one. Besides the very characteristic view depicted below, the tower offers a 360 degrees viewpoint, with views over the Letna Park, Petrin, and Vysehrad, among others.
Vrtba Gardens
I have talked extensively about Vrtba Gardens and how to visit them in my best parks of Prague guide. Nonetheless, the views from the upper gardens terrace are one of the best-kept secrets of the city. Moreover, combined with the symmetry of the gardens create a unique image of the city of Prague.

The entry fee to the gardens is especially worth it on sunny spring and summer days when the flowers and other plants are at their best. It felt like an oasis in the middle of the city, and a quite off-the-beaten-path location, although it has gotten more attention lately.
Old Town City Hall
Another of the best viewpoints of Prague is located at the heart of Old Town Square. The Old Town City Hall tower is well-known because of its astronomical clock, one of a kind, and a tourist spot. Nonetheless, the tower where it is located is also a fantastic viewpoint over the city. Standing 70 meters above the ground, you can see the whole city, as well as a different view of Old Town Square.
As with other items on this list, you will need to pay an entry fee to get to the top of the tower. Nonetheless, the ticket price is not that high considering all that is included. For 250 CZK you get access to the tower, the Gothic / Romanesque basement, and the historical halls. Moreover, within the historical halls, there is a small chapel where the famous apostles from the astronomical clock are. Without any doubt, this is the closest you can get to them.
Looking to save some money? Get there early! The entry during the first hour after opening is at a 50% discount! And the best thing is that tourist hordes are reduced as well.
Prague Castle Grounds
Although Prague Castle has its own viewpoint (see below), it is worth mentioning the castle grounds as they are completely free. From the Prague Castle Grounds, there are some amazing views over the city, especially over the Vltava river and the Old Town Square area.
Also featured in my best free parks in Prague guide, it might end up unnoticed if you don’t turn around when walking all the way up to the hill where the Prague Castle is located.
St Vitus Cathedral Lookout Tower
The view from one of the highest viewpoints of Prague must be one of the highlights on this list. Saint Vitus is Prague’s Cathedral and is located at the heart of Prague Castle. From this almost 100 meters tower, you will be able to see the whole city of Prague. All the major tourist attractions can be seen from there.
There is an entry fee of 150CZ to the tower of the Cathedral. This price does not include the visit to other areas of the Prague Castle such as the Cathedral itself or the famous Golden Lane. Thus, make sure to choose a day with good visibility to make the most out of your time there. Oh, and note that you will need to walk your way up to the tower, which means an insane number of steps. More information is available on the official Prague Castle website.
Powder Tower
From any of the viewpoints listed above, you will see some of the old Prague towers. The last one to make it to this list is the Powder Tower. It is located quite close to Wenceslas Square, and unlike the others, it is usually far less crowded.
Again, there is an entry fee of 150CZ, although similar to most of the places listed above, there is a 50% reduction for all those accessing during the first hour since opening.
The views from this tower are a bit different. It used to be a gunpowder store, thus, its location is not as centric as the other ones. The Prague Castle and the towers of the Charles Bridge can be seen from its 360 viewpoints. Moreover, you can also enjoy a view of less known areas of the city, such as Karlin and Zizkov.
Vyšehrad
I consider this to be the best Park in Prague, and it could also get the title of the best viewpoint over the city. Yes, it might be because I got a really nice sunset from there, but it is a really magical place. Vyšehrad is an old castle with a basilica, some great gardens, and a fantastic view of the Prague Castle and the Vltava river. Even more, the view also extends to the other side of the city (south), with some of the tallest buildings of Prague on the horizon.
It is free to get to the castle, you just need to climb some stairs if you come walking the promenade by the river. Otherwise, there are metro and tram stops nearby. Don’t miss Vyšehrad, it is one of the best areas to visit in Prague!
T-anker Bar Terrace
Prague and the Czech Republic are well known internationally for their world-class beer. At the T-anker bar, you can get both experiences. This bar has a privileged terrace with views over the old town. Unlike the other viewpoints listed, you won’t be higher than the main buildings, but at a similar height.
There is no entry fee, but you will be asked to drink or eat something. The prices are not cheap, but the beer is good, and at least when I visited it is not a crowded location, so you can take your own time and enjoy your beer and the views of Prague.
To get to the terrace, go to the Kotva Department Store. Once there, find the elevator (it looks a bit dodgy, but it is ok), and go straight to the upper floor.
