Cala de Cap Roig: beach sunrise photography

Visiting the Costa Brava is something everyone should do at least once in their life. Travelling I have seen impressive cliffs, crystalline coves, and vast expanses of sand. Lighthouses, castles, islands and islets. But nowhere have I found a landscape like the Costa Brava. Keep reading to discover one of its most beautiful photography: Cala de Cap Roig.

The variety of landscapes and the wild beauty of the beaches in winter led me to visit Cala de Cap Roig in the middle of winter. One of the busiest coves in summer, due to its idyllic location and beauty, in winter it offers tranquillity, silence and an ideal environment for taking photos.

Access

The cove is located between Platja d’Aro and Sant Antoni de Calonge, and can be reached by the so-called Camí de Ronda, a path that winds around the sea and offers spectacular views. If we want to get to Cala de Cap Roig without walking too much, we can leave the car in this car park, which is empty in the off-season.

From there, there are two access options, which can be clearly seen in the following image: either go down to the beach and follow the Camí de Ronda, or, find the path that goes down vertically to the beach. This second one, may be inaccessible, since the stairs are inside a parking lot that may be closed. It takes around 15 minutes to get to the beach, so consider this if you want to get there before sunrise

In location spots

What makes this beach unique? The huge rock that dominates the beach, going into the sea, and from any angle, will be part of the framing.

The best time to visit Cala Cap Roig is at sunrise, as it rises from behind the rock, a scene that combined with the colours of the blue hour or golden hour gives rise to unique photos.

In my opinion, there are three frames to play with on the beach:

  • Giving prominence to the main rock and using the small one as an element in the foreground
  • An aerial view, accessible from an elevated point of the beach, by the stairs that give access to nearby apartments and restaurants.
  • Playing with the stones that make up the beach, which create lines that help in the composition of the image.

But these aren’t the only options on the beach. There are views of Platja d’Aro, and the long exposures allow for special photography, especially if there is a bit of wind.
